When We Were Alone / David A. Robertson (Author), Julie Flett (Illustrator)
Highwater
2016
A young girl notices things about her grandmother that make her curious. Why does her grandmother have long, braided hair and beautifully coloured clothing? Why does she speak Cree and spend so much time with her family? As she asks questions, her grandmother shares her experiences in a residential school, when all of these things were taken away. - From Amazon

I liked the choice of alternating colors for text in the past vs in the present. The present day child questioning their elder to learn about the past and the sadness of that history was not a light read ... but with every "but when we were alone..." and the grandparent's description of how they kept their culture alive, their was a little smidge of hope.
