A refugee boy describes the long journey away from his home land to safety.
Would tie in to current events, with older kids. Use to foster empathy and compassion, to put yourself in the shoes of someone different from you. Draw connections between what is similar between student and Marwan (looking at his bags - "What items does he have that you have?" etc.)
Borras' earth toned watercolors are beautiful and messy. As the story progresses and Marwan dreams of a better future, they get more jewel toned and organized. I thought that was a beautiful visual representation of the refugee journey.
