Cinderella written and illustrated by Barbara McClintock
Scholastic Press
2005
Although mistreated by her stepmother and stepsisters, Cinderella meets a prince with the help of her fairy godmother.
Fairy and folktale versions.
I love how McClintock's illustrations set a very traditional scene. I love a good twist on the traditional fairy tale, but I also appreciate how she leans in to the french courtier origins of Perraults telling of the tale. Her detailed style adds a lavishness that echos the Rococo type of setting. McClintock's character's faces also are so expressive! You could almost read the whole story in their faces with out use of the text.
