The Little Island / Margaret Wise Brown (Author), Leonard Weisgard (Illustrator)

  • Doubleday

  • 1946

  • Winner of the 1947 Caldecott Medal, this beautifully moving story centers around a little island in the midst of the wide ocean, and the curious kitten who comes to visit. As the seasons pass, the island and the creatures who call it home witness an ever-changing array of sights, smells, and sounds – proving that, no matter how small, we are all an important part of the world. - From Amazon

  • Islands - Ocean wildlife - seasons

  • First a librarians technical note: This copy has clearly been in circulation a LONG time as it was WELL loved and showed it, but also I would like to have a word with whoever did the processing as there was stamps ALL UP in the illustrations. Respect the book people!

  • This book kind of felt like two stories in one - at first a natural history of the island, but then when the kitten arrives there's a tone shift from biological systems to a sort of existential wondering about the world. I don't hate it! It was strange though! I liked the economy of having the text page incorporate black and white spot art while the opposite page held a full color illustration.
