Du Iz Tak - Written and Illustrated by Carson Ellis
Candlewick Press
2016
A mysterious plant springs up in a neighborhood of bugs, and the bugs wonder what it is and what to do with it.
Would pair with seasons unit (observe the passing of time and how the static scene changes with the different seasons). Would also use with older kids to play with inferring language from context clues.
GOLLY GEE WHIZ THIS BOOK IS AMAZING. I love to pull it out and share with friends to watch the initial confusion at reading Ellis' made-up bug language turn into gleeful joy as they start to understand what is happening in the story as they observe the pictures, and all of a sudden believe that they can speak bug! There are so many fun surprises in the illustrations as the story progresses and you have to go back and check to see - "was that stick bug there the whole time!?"
