Time of Wonder / Robert McCloskey
Puffin Books
1977
Sisters spend a summer on an island, exploring and weathering storms.
Would tie in with summer stories. Nature explorations.
The opaque (maybe gouache?) paintings in this story are so different from what I'm used to from McCloskey, but it was lovely! There was less detail than I have come to expect from him, but what lacked there, was made up or in the beautiful concrete poetry. Paced wonderfully, with the awaited storm blowing in at just a little over halfway, this summer vacation story in second person puts the reader in the mind of wonder that McCloskey writes about, wondering "what would it be like to be these children". Lovely.
