Outside Over There / Maurice Sendak

  • HarperCollins

  • 1981

  • Ida's father is away at sea when one day her baby sister is stolen away by goblins and she must get her back.

  • Sibling responsibility? Fairytales?

  • I've only heard rumors of this book. I love Maurice Sendak, but this one gets mixed feelings from me! There's something uncanny about the large eyes of the children in these illustrations when so often Sendak has jolly eyes, squinted up in mischief or laughter. These stared into my SOUL. The story itself was reminiscent of Labyrinth with David Bowie... baby stolen by goblins, brave sister must rescue. It felt like a fever dream however. In that sense, I did like how Ida grew and shrunk her scale, much like Alice in wonderland, as she hunted down the goblins to rescue her sister. There was much that didn't make sense in the ways that dreams don't often make sense.
