I'll Fix Anthony / Judith Voirst, Ill. Arnold Lobel

  • Atheneum Books for Young Readers

  • 1969

  • A little brother thinks of the ways he will some day get revenge on his brother. - from publisher

  • Sibling conflict, growing up.

  • Boy, oh Boy. Kids will definitely be able to see themselves in this book. Even without having an older sibling, the feeling of "when I am six, I'll be able to do..." is a universal child feeling. I chuckled at the highly specific things the little boy think will be cool to do when he is six - like sharpen pencils. The text and illustrations play off each other well - like when he says "when I am six I'll read " and the illustration of him reading the New York Times is so perfectly lined up with the text that the eye automatically scans the title of the newspaper and fills that in. Perhaps my favorite part was the page turn from Anthony yelling "YOU STINK" to "When I'm six I'll fix Anthony." the pages have been white so far, but in a moment of dark humor, the background goes black, and the little boy has a mischievous quirk to his eyebrows. GENIUS.
