Dona Flor / written by Pat Mora, Ill. Raul Colon
Knopf
2005
Dona Flor is a kindly giant lady who tends the village animals and plays with the children and sets out to protect the village from a the source of a giant Roar!
Tall Tales - read alongside Paul Bunyan for another cultural take on a tall tale.
Colon's warm art echos the warmth of Dona Flor's heart towards her village. The textures created by scraping something in to the paint create a lovely fluid motion, and this giant woman is never heavy or cumbersome, but rather light and airy - defying gravity! I loved the integrated Spanish text, allowing for readers to infer meaning from context clues.
