Fairy Tale Versions
I don't think I've ever seen a winter-time set version of Little Red Riding Hood before! That alone made this version gorgeously illustrated by Pinkney stand out, not to mention the heroine being a child of color. In a story where the big bad can take on more human traits, I liked that Pinkney's wolf was still depicted very wolf-y. The actual peril depicted in this version of a VERY SCARY fairy tale was minimal, and it steered away from being too dark, with the exception of the silhouette of the woodcutter raising his axe while animals scurried away from the cottage. That I thought was tastefully done!
