Ira is thrilled to spend the night at Reggie's, until his sister raises the question of whether he should take his teddy bear. - From Amazon
Childhood Anxieties - Firsts
I remember this book from my own childhood. The rhythm of the text, "My sister said... My mother said... my father said..." brought me back to a sort of rocking rhythm of reassurance. The illustrations are clearly from the 70s -with the color choices and the patterns, but it doesn't feel dated for that. I noticed on this read through something I never caught as a kid - the photographic collage of real items that Ira and Reggie are playing with during the sleep over - stamps and bottle caps and other paraphernalia that's trash to adults but treasure to kids. It really stood out and caught my eye. I wanted to play WITH the kids. In the end, the comforting assurance of being accepted was a wonderful way to close.
