Leaf Written and illustrated by Sandra Dieckmann
Flying Eye Books
2017
"When a polar bear washes up on the edge of the wild wood, the other animals fear and avoid him. Then one day, they watch as he attempts something incredible... Gently highlighting the plight of polar bears in today's changing climate, Sandra Dieckmann's debut picture book is a heartwarming tale about helping outsiders" - from back cover.
Would pair with an ecosystems unit - to talk about what animals live where and why. For older kids would bring in alongside climate change discussions. Would also use for lessons on not making assumption about people that don't look like you.
The illustrations in this one were gorgeous! There was so much color and detail and I could study the botany for hours! The writing as a craft was nice, and I especially loved the moments when Leaf attempts flight "with a giant ... ROOOAR!" - but the story itself seemed a little on the nose and pat in comparison to the rich illustrations.
