A young girl's courage is tested in this haunting, wordless story. - From Amazon.
Teaching American History - Civil War
The first thing I noticed when picking up this book was the really thick paper the pages were printed on! It was a nice tactile experience that had little to do with the story, but I liked it. The graphite illustrations reminded me of the Garth Williams spot art in the Little House books - which definitely put me in the frame of mind for an American history story. The wordless book format was appropriate for a family keeping hush about the person they were hiding and protecting on their farm. Letting kids tell the story themselves instead of relying on words allows the reader to put themselves into the story and the shoes of this family making a scary, but important moral decision.
