Rapunzel Written and illustrated by Paul O. Zelinsky
Dutton Children's Books
1997
A retelling of the German folktale in which a beautiful girl with long golden hair is kept imprisoned in a lonely tower by a sorceress.
Would use in Folk and Fairy tale versioning for all ages. Maybe in art history when looking at the Renaissance period of painters as well.
The text of this retelling is very standard as far as fairy tales go - though this one includes some of the more gruesome and adult Rapunzel elements, such as the prince's eyes getting gouged, and Rapunzel's pregnancy (though they got married first! - by whom? we'll never know). The genius of this book however goes to the very traditional oil Renaissance style paintings. The styling of landscapes and drape of clothing and posing of figures would be excellent to compare and contrast with the greats of that period.
