The Invisible Garden, Story by Valerie Pickard, based on an idea by Marianne Ferrer (illustrations) Translated from the French by Sophie B. Watson
English edition: Orca Books
2019
This beautifully illustrated picture book tells the story of a little girl's journey through her grandmother's garden.
Use for talking about imaginary worlds and dream worlds.
I love the sparse text, and use of broad translucent splashes of color with the occasional bright and bold pop of color contrast that Marianne Ferrer uses in this story. More that than, I love how the illustrator plays with scale as Adrienne explores the garden, and the vast world within in the garden. One moment she's as small as an bug, and the next she's holding the tip of a mountain or the whole universe in her hand. The opportunities this affords for thinking about one's own place in the scale of the universe are great.
