Nobody likes a Goblin / Ben Hatke
First Second
2016
Goblin, a cheerful little homebody, lives in a cosy, rat-infested dungeon, with his only friend, Skeleton. Every day, Goblin and Skeleton play with the treasure in their dungeon. But one day, a gang of "heroic" adventurers bursts in. These marauders trash the place, steal all the treasure, and make off with Skeleton―leaving Goblin all alone! It's up to Goblin to save the day. But first he's going to have to leave the dungeon and find out how the rest of the world feels about goblins. - From Amazon.
Friendship
First off - I love First Second for graphic novels, but I had no idea they were in the picture book game as well! This was VERY exciting news to me. I love that this story takes the trope of an adventure party (complete with all the D&D character archetypes - Mage, Paladin, Rogue etc) and flips it - making the poor little goblin our protagonist as the "heroic" adventure party up ends his world. The art was really lovely! Ben Hatke does fantasy well. Also, I have a question. Where did the princess girl at the end come from? I can find no trace of her till the last two pages! Someone please share your thoughts on this!
Special thanks to sister and brother-in-law for having a kid so I had to buy this book for him and read it before I took it to the baby shower.
